"One of the most culturally rich destinations in the country"
Portsmouth is a city of roughly 21,000 people that sits near the mouth of the Piscataqua River that divides New Hampshire and Maine. The geographic location, historic past and cultural strength regularly lands Portsmouth on various "best places to live" lists. It has been called "one of the most culturally rich destinations in the country", with a stimulating mix of historic buildings, sidewalk cafes, great restaurants, art galleries, jazz clubs and distinctive artisans' boutiques.
The city also is at the hub of a metropolitan region that includes the cities of Rochester and Dover, N.H., and many towns – Exeter, Hampton, Greenland, Stratham, Newington, and Rye, N.H.; Kittery, Eliot, South Berwick and York, Maine; and others. (See the Map)
New Hampshire's seacoast captures the essence of New England's oceanfront. In just 18 miles of coastline, there are long, sandy beaches, working ports, offshore islands, surf-stung rocks, and popular resort towns and villages that date back nearly four hundred years.
A few of the amenties to be found in the Seacoast area ... plus Boston is a 1-hour drive away
Prescott Park, about 6 blocks from downtown and the Market Square, is a popular waterfront park. The grounds are comprised of over ten acres of riverside lawns, gardens and walkways, three boardwalk piers and two public docking areas.
The Isles of Shoals, nine rocky isles six miles off the New Hampshire and Maine coast, is a haven for the occasional pirate, and a summer retreat for artists and the well-to-do. Various excursion boat companies cruise to the Shoals.
Hampton Beach, the most popular beach in the region, has been drawing visitors by the hundreds of thousands since the turn of the century.
A few miles from Portsmouth is Durham, the home of the University of New Hampshire. UNH is made up of dozens of academic departments, interdisciplinary institutes, and research centers that attract students and faculty from around the world. Some 14,000 students and hundreds of faculty and staff live and work amid the rolling hills and riverbeds of one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation ... and much more
New Hampshire is made up of seven very different regions, each as exciting as the next.
The regions are The Seacoast, Dartmouth - Lake Sunapee, Lakes Region, Merrimack Valley, Monadnock Region, White Mountains and Great North Woods, all filled with natural beauty, cultural events and classic New England living.
Plus, New Hampshire does not have a State income tax or sales tax. |
